This is how you get not only a good photo, but also a photo that would be telling a story.
I'd also recommend to experiment with editing. There is a free black and white photo editor that you can use for making the photos b&w, and some portraits are better when done in black and white, so this is what I really like doing.

you are absolutely correct. instead of paying again for 10~25bucks for cables.. try to find in some drawers, you will defiantly find some old mini usb cables of old cell phones.. because not only me.. some of my friends had the same experience with their Canon camera.

You may use any settings you find from your camera and you see shadows and lightning beforehand. Before shooting you can see what you get on the lap top screen. I have €10 and €25 cables and both work fine.
